Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

Hair diary

Grateful for another day. Last time for my wash routine I was a bit rushed and didn't give enough time to the process. Now I am getting closer to relaxer and got some breathing room. Yesterday I washed my hair. Made myself comfortable with my moisturiser and wide tooth comb and made sure my hair was detangled.  I already have plenty of new growth. Hard to believe it's only been 6 weeks post last relaxer. The tangles and knots don't play. I have a very tender scalp so getting on top of the tangles before relaxer is a priority for me. You don't want to be trying to detangle and applying relaxer at the same time! As we know life happens and sometimes you might not get to washing your hair or detangling it. The best way I have found to help me not look completely crazy is to have a routine in place with some go to styles for those challenging times. Having a routine helps keep things manageable. Even if it doesn't always go as planned you can work things for next round....

Day 30: Clarify

The first wash day of the month I usually use a clarifying shampoo instead of my normal shampoo.  Clarifying your hair helps remove the build up on your hair. It also helps remove 'cones' like silicones from shampoos and conditioners. It's like a mini reset for your hair which helps keep your hair able to absorb what it needs. How often do you clarify?

Day 29

This is a shot from last relaxer day after the process. My hair has been detangled and no product in it. I am currently using ORS No Lye box relaxer in extra strength. This is the result that I get a looser curl pattern and my hair is more manageable.

Day 28: Why you need a bare minimum regimen

My regimen this time has been on the simple and boring side. I believe it's good to have that in your arsenal. When you get busy and life throws things at you sometimes all you can do is the bare minimum if that. Knowing the bare minimum when it comes to your hair will reduce the number of things you have to worry about. When you go and try a new regimen and it doesn't work quite well this bare minimum regimen can help you reset and probably figure out what didn't work.  The bun is my default go to bare minimum style. I have been practising my braiding skills and now my hair is even long enough to put into two braids. So I can change things up and still keep my regimen simple. As my hair grows out I have a whole list of styles I want to try. The best part is that they fit with my simple regimen. If I can keep to this regimen as best as I can those dreaded tangles and matting also keep away.  The number of products I need is also minimal. Shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser an...

Day 27

Happy hump day! The week is still ticking along. Around this time I start thinking about wash day. It's coming up so I check my schedule and plan for it. Depending on what's happening I might move it up a day or so, or push it back. So far it's looking like Saturday.  How has your week been so far?

Day 26

Another Tuesday another nicely paced day. Still warming up to the week and trying to work down my to do list. Hair still up and covered. Nice and easy. How is your week going so far?

Day 25: My favourite tool for relaxed hair

I love my wide tooth combs.  They are my favourite tools of the trade if you will. I have one in my shower to detangle my hair as I wash it. At first I thought how is a wide tooth comb going to get all the tangles and shed hair out? As long as I kept on top of my wash and relaxer routine I did not have any issues with tangles at all. Generally I detangle in the shower after applying conditioner then I rinse it out. Once out I may then lightly detangle after moisturising my hair. Usually there's not much, if any tangles at this point.  Then I put my hair up ir braid it and that's it. If I moisturise between wash days I usually just use my fingers and hands to smooth my hair back down. I generally only put a comb to my hair when it has product it in. A wide tooth comb reduces the amount of manipulation and stress you put on your hair. It works quite well when you have a good routine in place of detangling your hair. A little patience never hurt either. What is your favourite hair...

Day 24

Realised there's less than a week left in my self imposed 30 day challenge.  Today as usual I am taking it easy as I get ready for the week. My to do list is so long and I have already accepted not all of it will be done. My hair is still covered. Keeping it moisturised and that's really it. Still simple.  Hope you're having a restful weekend!

Day 23

I love when the weekend comes around and I know I have one less thing to add to my to do list! Wash day is next week. Tried to get through as much as possible and also rest. It's always tough to find that happy medium.  When is your wash day?

Day 22

Happy Friyay! As has been the usual,  nothing exciting happening here. Moisturised my hair and am keeping it under  a scarf. Once we are out and about again I'll be thinking about what to wear and if it goes with my bun or a scarf. Hope you have a great and restful weekend ahead!

Day 21

Today I am 3 weeks post relaxer.  I remember the first few days after relaxer having an itch to try different styles. That itch has since been long gone! My default is not touching my hair as long as possible and so styles that can only be worn for the day do not appeal as much. I must admit though it's nice to be able to mix it up and dress up your hair for special occasions.  So while I may not be changing my hair every week I want to make a point of trying at least one different style every stretch. That way I can find styles that I like and practice them every now and then. I have a few hair accessories that I will try and put to good use. I did end up in a black hole of hair accessories for all kinds of updos but am holding back from buying new toys before I can even utilise what I have right now. My hair right now is in scarf all nice and covered. No surprises there. What are your favourite hair accessories and styles?

Day 20: Exercising with relaxed hair

The topic of exercising can be a long one. This too can be quite personal. At the moment I  am doing light exercise which is brisk walking at least 5days a week between 30minutes to an hour each time. I keep my hair in a bun and will either have a scarf or head band on. I might have a little sweat on my face etc but it's not dripping. So I usually leave my scarf or head band on until that dries. When I used to go swimming once a week, that day became my wash day. Afterwards I would style my hair for the rest of the week.  As you can see and from my posts till now, I like to keep things simple. I might move up my wash day back to once a week if I start doing more and still keep it simple. What have you found helpful in keeping your hair happy when exercising?

Day 19

I can't believe it's still only Tuesday.  Some weeks it goes so fast and others it slows right down.  This is one of those slow moving ones. You're busy and it feels like Thursday but it's not. My hair is still covered  and I am enjoying some of this slow pace.
