Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

Day 18

Another wonderfully boring hair day. Keeping my hair covered since I am really not going anywhere.  I did go for a walk around the block to stretch my legs and not much else. How has your Monday been?

Day 17: My biggest mistake relaxing my hair

The biggest mistake I have made in the past is stretching my relaxer too long. My hair tangles and starts matting so easily going longer than two weeks without detangling is a gamble. When I stretch too long it means the detangling sessions are also going to be very long. So sometimes things would come up and I would not be able to keep my hair detangled.  To add on top of that I would also sometimes wash my hair and put it up without detangling it. At about four weeks of not detangling there's sections of hair that I know will need to be cut out because no amount of patience is going to get it undone.  Part of what led me to stretch for too long was that I couldn't find a good hairdresser. Even now some places open and shut down so quickly. You go there first time to check them out and maybe get an oil treatment and blow out. When you go back it's now a bakery. Like I was here a couple of weeks ago what happened? Is this business card I am holding a lie? I had always thoug...

Day 16

I thought I had published this post but clearly that didn't happen. Nothing exciting missed though. Double posts coming today. Weekend staying home so my hair is staying under my scarf all day. I  am not going to worry about it because it is covered. Liking keeping things simple. Hope you have a great weekend.

Day 15: Wash day

I am just over two weeks post relaxer. I was initially thinking to wait until the weekend to wash my hair but decided to go ahead and have one less thing to worry about. It was a simple shampoo and then condition. No prepoo or deep conditioning. I also detangle in the shower with conditioner in my hair.  Afterwards I put my hair in  a low bun to airdry. Will moisturise it and that's it. Simple and quick. Until next wash day I will do my daily routine of moisturising and putting it up for the night. I think this stretch I will keep to a low bun as my go to. As I gain length and can easily stretch my hair without heat I might try more styles. Right now the curls are back and it's not as easy as when it is flat ironed. What is your wash day routine like?

Day 14: A lesson learned from relaxing my hair

Pain is not normal. It should not be a characteristic of how you style your hair. This is the biggest lesson I learned. When I was still trying to find a good hairdresser this was one of the red flags I looked for. Some would say to just bear with it for a while, beauty is painful... No, it does not have to be. If a stylist took me seriously when I said my scalp is tingling already and made efforts to wrap up and get me rinsed out they got points from me. Usually stylists who insisted I wait longer were also the ones who did not listen to requests like not using  a rat tail comb to smooth the relaxer or detangle. My hair needs a lot of patience a lot of the time. While it is thick and very coily and can handle extra strength relaxer, my scalp is not made of steel.  I have already accepted the fact that my hair will never be relaxed bone straight. When people see my hair air dried they ask if I am going to relax my hair! I just smile. Now I am doing it all myself. I am happy to be able ...

Day 13

Still going. Back to my bun and moisturising my hair. Planning on wash day this Saturday. We are half way through the week and I am looking up hair styles that I may or may not try. I really want to keep this stretch simple and boring. This is usually what works the best for me. All the excitement and breakage get old pretty quick.

Day 12

I tried putting my hair up differently. Still keeping my ends tucked away. Hope you had a great start to the week!
