Farewell 2024

2024 has been a wild ride gone in a flash. Managed to do a small trim and ended the year on a high hair note. Work, health and life have kept me from writing more. I also kept my hair routine to a bare minimum. I managed to wash about once a week and kept it in a bun most of the time.  This worked quite well and am going to continue keeping things simple. Before taking this photo I had been asked if it's my real hair a few times when I had it down. In 2025 I would like to be more regular with my trims. I barely managed to do it twice this year. The soft v shape and layers are a bit more forgiving and don't let my hair look scraggly too much which helps. I am hoping as I take better care of my health I'll have more energy for my hair. My current wash and blow dry routine takes me about an hour and a half and that's been the most I could do this year. I will try take better pictures in the coming year. I might also dig to see if I have any others from this year to share m...

New hair style who dis?

I gave in and went and got my hair done. I had been debating on getting my relaxer touch up or some other style.  Not sure how long this will last me though. I can't even remember having it before. It is a welcome break for a couple of weeks at least.  Since I was already at the tail end of my stretch more care is needed so I don't end up with a lot of breakage.  I already have two areas that need extra care. My edges and the crown of my head and for very different reasons.  I went through  a phase were I was tying my scarf too tight and this caused a lot of friction on my edges. The scarves just don't stay on my head and I was being  a bit stubborn about finding the perfect way to tie them so they stay on. I have given up on that thought but the damage has already been done. While it's not a major issue because I stopped before it got too bad I still need to remember to treat that area gently and with more care. My crown on the other hand is the coiliest part of my hai...

Washday

Today was washday and I finally managed to get it done from start to finish. Total time was just under an hour and a half. My hair was already matted in the braids but it wasn't too bad. I just had to be extra patient while detangling my hair. Four weeks is the maximum I can keep cornrows in without rebraiding.  I mentioned in my last post that I had three cornrows in. It was actually quite challenging doing them especially the middle one so today I put it into two.  I am currently 6weeks post relaxer. I haven't decided yet when my next touch up is because my schedule has been all over the place and energy levels low. I  have also been thinking that  I need to find someone who can do my hair. Even if it's a twice a year thing it will be good to do that as a treat. I  am also looking for hairstyle inspiration. As my hair grows out I want to have an arsenal of styles for different occasions. For now my hair is either under a scarf, in a bun or straight. My braiding and partin...

Doing the bare minimum of the bare minimum

It's been a while since my last post. Thought to drop a quick note as I contemplate the state of my hair. I washed my hair on Sunday. A very basic shampoo and condition kind of wash and that was it. My hair is currently in three big cornrows. It has been like this since my last wash day three weeks ago.  The good thing is that I haven't been going anywhere and have been keeping my hair under a scarf. The only reason I gave in and washed my hair was because it started itching. I did not have the energy to do any more than this. These kinds of situations can happen and the best thing is to take small steps no matter how small the steps. A little reminder to myself. Hope you've  had a great week so far.

Hair milestone

I managed to get my hair in this braid for the first time ever! It was quick and easy to do. I kept this in for a week. I will be going back to either two or three braids/cornrows for the rest of my stretch and it's good to have this in my back pocket as a quick style. What are some of your favourite updos?

September relaxer update

It's been 8weeks since last relaxer already.  I think I figured out why my scalp starts to itch after a certain amount of time. I will be using this stretch to test my theory out. This relaxer day went well. As my hair grows out there's more volume. My bun looks a good size too.  I blow dried and did a small trim. My hair is soft and making great progress. I plan to keep it braided up after this week. I have been doing the bare minimum with my routine. This is better than nothing and I know I cannot maintain this. Other parts of my life need some work and considering the current conditions I am not pushing myself too hard just making incremental changes.  How are you going? Have you been able to keep up with your hair routine?

July Relaxer Update

I briefly mentioned my relaxer in the last post but it's taken me a while for a proper update. Hair is still curly. Even though I use extra strength relaxer and for the longest recommended time my hair does not relax straight. I am grateful that I can put a comb through it and that's the main thing for me. Last stretch I was trying to see how I could manage with just bunning my hair. While it is the simplest way to have my hair up at my current length there are a few challenges especially as the stretch goes on. By the time I relaxed I was more than ready. It's not a major deal breaker but when you are going through a challenging season taking your bun down so you  can moisturise and seal your hair and put it back up can be just one task too many on your list. Sometimes even wash day has to be pushed back a few and that may add more work down the track. I am going to try different ways of putting my hair up and see which ones work well for me. I generally don't like hav...

From Inside Out

One of the things that doesn't get talked about a lot is how your overall health can impact your hair growth, look and feel. If you are not eating healthy food adding various products directly to your hair may not give you the results you are after. By eating well it helps your hair as it comes from the scalp. Like everything else there are times when I haven't been able to stay on top of things like exercise and making that healthy choice when I'm too tired to cook and order out. The past couple of weeks have been challenging for various reasons. My scalp has been irritated and my schedule packed. I had to move my relaxer day because an irritated scalp can result in relaxer burn. Doing my wash routine was more than enough to tire me out and it's not that strenuous.  I found someone to relax my hair which was good. It did remind me of one of my frustrations of not having a great hairdresser I can rely on. Sometimes having someone else do your hair is so good! I would lo...
